CREATIVE IMPACT

Honoring the journey of discovery and belonging

Halo Halo Showcase is a multimedia art exhibit centered around identity and belonging for four first-generation Filipino Canadians: Harvey Nichol, Moey Aquino, Euniz Brown, and Salvacion Atay.

The six-month showcase was featured at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland. Its creators sought to enhance visitors’ experience by building an interactive experience that enabled dialogue and conversation. This was achieved through two specially designed take-away pieces: a passport brochure and boarding pass tickets.

The boarding passes included prompts that asked the viewer:

  • “Belonging is …”
  • “Has Canada met your expectations? Why or why not?”

Thanks to the glassless display, visitors could write their responses directly on the boarding passes and then add them to the exhibition itself.

Both companion pieces—the passport and boarding passes—drew inspiration from the journeys of migrants to Canada. The passport, while akin to traditional passport designs, specifically contained graphic elements that mirrored the exhibit’s bold and maximalist style.

The passport and boarding passes had a significant impact on the overall exhibition. By the end of the exhibition, over 200 signed boarding passes had been submitted, while the exhibition drew more than 15,000 visitors.
